JUST IN: UNIZIK, UNIBEN, NSUK, Others Hit by University Strikes Across Nigeria Published: September 11, 2026 | OGB Admission Hub Academic activities in a number of Nigerian universities are currently being disrupted by industrial actions as branches of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other university workers’ unions press governments and university authorities over unpaid salaries, allowances and implementation of agreements. One of the latest institutions affected is Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka , where ASUU declared an indefinite strike following what the union described as the incomplete payment of members’ August 2026 salaries. Lecturers were directed to withdraw academic and administrative services until the outstanding payment is made. Universities Currently Affected by Strikes 1. Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka ASUU-UNIZIK commenced an indefinite strike on September 7 over the alleged incomplete payment of August salaries. The union said lectures, examinations, supervision and other academic duties would remain suspended until the issue is resolved. University management has, however, disputed the union's description of the payment issue, maintaining that salaries were paid and that the outstanding matter relates to academic allowances. 2. University of Benin (UNIBEN) The UNIBEN chapter of ASUU has also declared a total and indefinite withdrawal of services over what the union described as underpayment of August salaries. The union directed lecturers to stop teaching, supervision and participation in departmental, faculty and Senate activities. UNIBEN management disputes the allegation that lecturers received half salaries, stating that staff salaries are up to date. 3. Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) ASUU at Nasarawa State University has been on an indefinite strike since August 10 over the alleged failure to implement the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement and other unresolved local issues. Recent reports confirm that the industrial action remains unresolved, with students and the university appealing for government intervention. 4. Plateau State University, Bokkos (PLASU) Lecturers at Plateau State University declared an indefinite strike in late August over several demands, including salary-related arrears, implementation of the FGN-ASUU agreement, pension issues and staff welfare. 5. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai The ASUU chapter of IBBU also began an indefinite strike in August over the alleged non-implementation of provisions of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement by the Niger State Government. 6. Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) AAUA has been experiencing prolonged industrial action. Students recently protested the disruption of academic activities and demanded an immediate end to the strike. ASUU as well as non-academic unions have been involved in the industrial dispute. 7. University of Medical Sciences, Ondo (UNIMED) ASUU-UNIMED declared a total and indefinite strike over the alleged failure to implement the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement and pay arrears dating from January 2026. 8. Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH) OAUSTECH is also affected by industrial action involving non-academic university unions. SSANU, NASU and NAAT declared an indefinite strike across Ondo State-owned universities, including OAUSTECH, AAUA and UNIMED, over implementation of agreements and unpaid allowances. Kaduna State University Also Facing Industrial Action ASUU at Kaduna State University (KASU) previously commenced a two-week warning strike on August 28 over salary adjustments, promotion arrears, earned allowances and other unresolved issues. Fresh local reports indicate that the chapter has now escalated the action following the expiration of the warning strike, although discussions between the state government and the unions have been ongoing. More Universities Could Join The situation could spread further if ongoing negotiations fail. ASUU at Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa , has announced a two-week warning strike scheduled to begin on September 15, 2026 , if its demands remain unresolved. Meanwhile, ASUU at Sokoto State University has given the Sokoto State Government another two-week window to meet outstanding demands, warning that failure could result in industrial action. The university is therefore not yet on strike based on the latest report , but a strike remains possible. Important Notice to Students and Admission Seekers Students should note that these are mostly branch-level industrial actions , not a nationwide ASUU strike affecting every Nigerian university. Admission applicants should also continue monitoring their schools' official portals, JAMB CAPS and verified announcements because admission processing may continue even when lectures are disrupted , depending on the institution. The industrial situation can also change quickly when unions and governments reach agreements. Candidates are therefore advised to confirm the current status of their institution before travelling to campus. OGB Admission Hub will continue monitoring universities across Nigeria and update students immediately when strikes are suspended or additional institutions join industrial action.
