LASU ADMISSION PROCESSING "GIMMICK" AND HOW TO GET ADMITTED

LASU ADMISSION PROCESSING GIMMICK AND HOW TO GET ADMITTED A lot of students call it a “gimmick” because Lagos State University does not rely mainly on a traditional Post-UTME CBT exam anymore. LASU’s system is more of a ranking and screening strategy than a single examination battle. Here’s how LASU admission really works behind the scenes: The LASU “Gimmick” 1. Aggregate Is Everything LASU mainly ranks candidates using: JAMB score O’Level grades Sometimes screening factors/verification They convert your JAMB and O’Level into an aggregate score and rank candidates department by department. A common explanation used is: JAMB ÷ 8 = 50% O’Level points = remaining 50% Then both are added together Example: If you score 280 in JAMB: 280 \div 8 = 35 Then if your O’Level points give you 42: 35 + 42 = 77 That 77 aggregate may beat someone with 320 JAMB but weak WAEC grades. That is the first “gimmick” many students don’t understand. 2. O’Level Is Extremely Important LASU values strong WAEC/NECO grades heavily. A student with: 250 JAMB All A1/B2 can beat: 300 JAMB Many C grades for competitive courses. So LASU is one of the few universities where WAEC can seriously save or destroy admission chance. 3. Lagos Indigene Advantage Is Real LASU gives significant preference to Lagos indigenes. Sources commonly describe the system as heavily favoring indigenes in admission distribution. That means: Two students with similar aggregate scores may not have equal chances. Non-indigenes usually need stronger aggregates for competitive departments. This is another reason people call the process “political.” Even though it is not political. 4. Competitive Courses Have Hidden Benchmarks LASU may announce a general cut-off like 195, but that is only eligibility. Realistic safe scores are much higher for: • Law • Nursing • Medicine • Computer Science • Accounting For example, some guides recommend: • Nursing: 270+ • Medicine: 240+ • Law: 230+ range So many students think: “I passed the cut-off, why no admission?” because LASU admits by ranking, not sympathy. How To Actually Get Admitted Into LASU 1. Target a High Aggregate, Not Just High JAMB This is the most important strategy. Many students obsess over JAMB alone. LASU cares about: • Combined strength • Smart course selection • Ranking position 2. Use Smart Course Strategy If your aggregate is average: • avoid ultra-competitive courses. A 68–72 aggregate may fail for Law but succeed for: • Education courses • Some Arts courses • Certain Social Sciences Course strategy matters massively. 3. Make LASU First Choice Early LASU is strict about first-choice requirements. Late change of institution can become risky once screening starts. 4. Upload Correct O’Level Immediately Many students lose admission because: • result not uploaded to CAPS • wrong grades entered • mismatch in names/details Even strong candidates get skipped because of this. 5. Monitor CAPS Constantly Admission sometimes appears there before official announcements. Accept quickly once offered. 6. Consider Less Saturated Departments This is one of the smartest LASU hacks. Instead of: • Law • Nursing • Mass Comm look at: • Education combinations • Some science courses • Industrial relations • Fisheries • Philosophy • Yoruba • Certain tech-related emerging programs Many students ignore them, so competition drops. 7. One Sitting WAEC Gives Advantage LASU accepts two sittings, but one sitting is stronger for competitive courses. Students who understand the system early usually outperform students with better raw intelligence but poor strategy.
