NANS Demands Immediate Rescue of Abducted Gateway ICT Polytechnic Students

NANS Demands Immediate Rescue of Abducted Gateway ICT Polytechnic Students OGB Admission Hub Desk The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on the Federal Government, Ogun State Government, and all relevant security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue five students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, Ogun State , who were abducted by armed men. According to NANS, the students were kidnapped after gunmen attacked a private hostel along Paraga Road, Ipara , on Wednesday, July 29, 2026 . The association described the incident as another disturbing sign of the growing insecurity around tertiary institutions in Nigeria. NANS Condemns Rising Insecurity In a statement issued by its President, Akinteye Babatunde , NANS condemned the attack, stressing that students should never have to risk their lives in pursuit of education. The student body noted that the latest incident occurred only days after another security breach at D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori , where an HND II student reportedly lost her life during a robbery attack while others sustained injuries. NANS said the recurring attacks have created fear among students and their families. Call for Immediate Action NANS urged the following agencies to ensure the safe and unconditional release of the abducted students: Nigeria Police Force Department of State Services (DSS) Nigerian Army Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Other relevant security agencies The association emphasized that every available resource should be deployed to rescue the students and strengthen security around campuses nationwide. Demand for Better Student Accommodation Beyond the rescue operation, NANS also called on governments to invest more in affordable on-campus accommodation , arguing that many students are exposed to security risks because they are forced to live in private hostels located far from their campuses. According to the association, improved hostel facilities would significantly reduce students' exposure to kidnapping and other violent crimes. Growing Concern for Student Safety The incident has renewed concerns over the security of students in tertiary institutions across Nigeria. Stakeholders have continued to call for stronger collaboration between governments, school authorities, host communities, and security agencies to protect lives and property. Students and parents are advised to remain vigilant, follow official updates from their institutions, and report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
