Why Adekunle Ajasin University Lecturers Are on Strike Despite Salary Release

Academic activities at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) remain disrupted as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), AAUA chapter, has maintained that the release of outstanding salary funds alone will not stop the ongoing industrial action. The union insists that while payment of salary arrears is important, the Ondo State Government must also implement the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU agreement , which includes a revised salary structure and other negotiated welfare provisions. Why Did AAUA Lecturers Go on Strike? The AAUA chapter of ASUU began an indefinite strike on July 10, 2026 , following the non-payment of lecturers' salaries for May and June 2026 . As the dispute continued, the union said members were subsequently owed May, June, and July salaries , worsening the financial hardship faced by academic staff. According to the union, lecturers had endured months of delayed salaries before deciding to suspend academic activities. Salary Payment Alone Is Not Enough Although reports indicate that Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa approved a special intervention fund to clear salary arrears, ASUU says that receiving salary alerts is only one part of the solution. Speaking on behalf of the union, AAUA ASUU Chairman Dr. Boluwaji Oshodi explained that the lecturers would not rely on assurances until the salaries were actually paid into members' accounts. He also stressed that the union's broader concern is the implementation of the 2025 ASUU/Federal Government agreement. Fresh Strike May Follow The union warned that even if the outstanding salaries are paid, another round of industrial action could begin if the new salary structure and other aspects of the 2025 agreement are not implemented. ASUU disclosed that it has completed its internal processes for another strike and is only awaiting approval from its national leadership. If approved, the action could affect all three Ondo State-owned universities: Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA) Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH) University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) Impact on Students The continued strike has left thousands of students uncertain about when lectures and other academic activities will resume. Student leaders have also expressed concern, with reports indicating that the AAUA Students' Union has called on the Ondo State Government to urgently resolve the crisis. What Students Should Do Students of AAUA are advised to: Monitor official announcements from the university and ASUU. Stay in touch with their departments for updates. Avoid relying on unverified social media reports. Use the strike period, where possible, for personal study and academic preparation. OGB Admission Hub Analysis The current dispute is no longer just about unpaid salaries. It has expanded into a broader disagreement over the implementation of negotiated conditions of service for lecturers. Unless both the salary arrears and the outstanding agreement are addressed, there remains a possibility of prolonged disruption to academic activities in Ondo State's public universities. Students and parents should therefore continue to monitor developments closely.
