Alternative University Admission Routes: Questions to Ask Before Paying for a Programme

A disappointing UTME outcome does not mean every educational option has ended. However, an alternative programme is an application route with conditions, not a promise of university admission.

A-level and foundation programmes

Before choosing IJMB, JUPEB or a university foundation programme, ask the intended degree-awarding university which qualifications it accepts for the exact course. Check the required subjects, grades, entry level and Direct Entry procedure. Completing a preparatory programme does not automatically guarantee a degree place.

Pre-degree, part-time and distance learning

Read the institution’s progression rules before enrolling in pre-degree study. Ask whether a later UTME result, qualifying examination or minimum performance is required. Do not assume that students are absorbed automatically.

For part-time or distance programmes, verify the awarding institution, approved course, attendance expectations, assessment arrangements and applicable JAMB procedures. Flexible delivery does not establish that every programme is wholly self-paced or exempt from admission documentation.

Compare the full cost and conditions

Request written information about tuition, examination charges, duration, refund terms and what happens if progression requirements are not met. Confirm any claim about professional recognition or future mobilisation with the relevant authority for that route.

Transfer admission also depends on the receiving institution’s rules and available places. An agent cannot promise acceptance on a university’s behalf.
