Federal Polytechnic Ilaro Now a University, Targets 2027/2028 Take-Off

The former Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State , has been upgraded to the Federal University of Technology, Ilaro (FUTI) , with management targeting the 2027/2028 academic session for the commencement of university operations.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor and Rector, Dr Mukail Aremu Akinde , disclosed the planned take-off while discussing preparations for the institution’s transition, according to a September 29 report by PUNCH .

University Status Confirmed

An official statement published by the institution confirms that Federal Polytechnic Ilaro was converted to a university in May 2025 .

The statement also disclosed that principal officers received appointment letters from the Federal Ministry of Education dated 9 February 2026 , recognising their positions under the Federal University of Technology, Ilaro.

Dr Akinde was named Acting Vice-Chancellor, alongside the institution’s Registrar, Bursar and University Librarian.

Preparations Underway for 2027/2028

Akinde explained that the transition was being handled strategically, with committees working on the requirements for university operations.

Preparations include National Universities Commission verification, an Academic Brief and a new institutional Master Plan.

Speaking on the proposed commencement session, he said:

“God willing, we are targeting the 2027/28 academic session as a start-off year.”

The announced session is therefore a management target , rather than confirmation that university admissions have already commenced.

What Prospective Students Should Know

Candidates interested in studying at FUTI should watch for official announcements detailing approved degree programmes, admission requirements, application procedures and school fees.

Applicants should also distinguish existing polytechnic admission notices from future university degree admissions. A notice for an ND or HND programme should not automatically be treated as an invitation to apply for a university degree.

Existing students should follow official instructions concerning their programmes and qualifications during the transition.
