JAMB 2027/2028: Avoid Costly Mistakes Before You Register—Your Complete Admission Preparation Guide

By OGBAdmissionHub News Desk | 15 October 2026

Your journey to higher education begins before you enter the JAMB examination hall. Choosing the right course, registering the correct subjects and presenting acceptable O’Level results are essential steps towards a successful application.

A strong UTME score matters, but it cannot correct an unsuitable subject combination or replace a compulsory O’Level credit.

For students preparing for the 2027/2028 admission session , now is the time to review your qualifications, understand your options and prepare carefully.

At OGBAdmissionHub , we help students make informed choices, avoid registration errors and follow their admission journey with greater confidence.

Important: This is a preparation guide

This article explains what prospective applicants should check while preparing for 2027/2028. It does not announce the commencement of 2027 JAMB registration.

The official sources checked for this guide contain the 2026 admission benchmarks. Do not treat previous registration dates, fees, age assessment dates or cut-off marks as confirmed requirements for 2027. Follow JAMB’s forthcoming session-specific instructions.

1. Choose a course that matches your qualifications

Before choosing an institution, ask yourself:

Do my O’Level subjects meet the requirements for this course?

Can I register the required UTME subject combination?

Does my preferred institution offer the programme?

Are there additional requirements for that particular school?

What suitable alternatives can I consider?

Do not choose a course only because it is popular or because someone else gained admission to study it. Your interests, academic strengths and qualifications should guide your decision.

Where your results do not meet a programme’s requirements, identify the missing subjects or explore suitable alternatives before registration.

2. Confirm your UTME subject combination

UTME candidates take Use of English and three other subjects relevant to their intended course . Use of English is compulsory.

Your remaining subjects must match the approved combination for your programme. Check the exact institution’s entry and any special considerations in JAMB’s Integrated Brochure and Syllabus System, commonly called IBASS .

A subject combination suitable for one programme may not qualify you for another.

Before registering: use the OGB UTME Eligibility Checker to review your intended course, school, O’Level results and proposed UTME subjects.

3. Review your O’Level results carefully

Having several credits does not automatically mean you have the right credits for your course.

Check:

The required subjects and minimum grades.

The number of sittings accepted.

Whether combined results are permitted.

Which examination qualifications the institution accepts.

Any additional conditions attached to your programme.

For example, a candidate may have enough credit passes overall but still lack a subject required for the chosen course.

Do not assume that another school’s rules apply to your preferred institution. Read the current course requirements and institution-specific remarks.

4. Understand cut-off marks before planning around them

For reference, JAMB published the following minimum tolerable scores for the 2026 admission exercise :

Institution category

2026 minimum score

Universities

150

Colleges of Nursing

150

Polytechnics and monotechnics

100

Colleges of Education

100

Colleges of Agriculture

100

Innovation Enterprise Institutions

100

These are 2026 reference figures, not confirmed 2027 cut-off marks.

Applicants should also understand three different requirements:

Requirement

What it means

National minimum score

The baseline approved for an institution category

Institutional screening threshold

The score required to apply for a particular school’s screening

Programme selection criteria

The conditions used to select candidates for a specific course

Meeting a national minimum does not automatically qualify you for every programme. Competitive courses may require stronger scores and additional conditions.

5. Check the applicable age requirement

JAMB’s currently published policy states a minimum admission age of 16 years . However, candidates preparing for 2027 must check the official instructions for the applicable age assessment date and any exceptional-candidate provisions.

Do not assume that an assessment date or exception published for an earlier admission year will automatically apply to 2027.

6. Keep your personal and examination records consistent

Before registration, review your:

Full name and spelling.

Date of birth.

Identity records.

Examination numbers and years.

O’Level subjects and grades.

Contact email and telephone number.

Use contact details you can continue to access throughout the admission process.

Where your records differ, follow the appropriate official correction procedure. Do not submit inaccurate information simply to complete a form quickly.

Keep copies of your registration slip, results, receipts and screening records.

7. Understand how awaiting results affect admission

Candidates awaiting O’Level results should check the registration instructions and the institution’s result submission deadline.

Registering with awaiting results does not remove the need to obtain the required credits. JAMB explains that awaiting-result candidates must upload their results to its portal before being considered for admission.

When your results become available, confirm that the required upload has been completed correctly. Also follow any separate upload instructions issued by your institution.

8. Prepare for your school’s screening exercise

After UTME, monitor your chosen institution’s official admission notices.

Depending on the school and session, screening may involve an examination, online assessment, document verification or other published procedures.

Confirm the:

Application opening and closing dates.

Screening eligibility requirements.

Required documents.

Approved payment channel.

Assessment format.

Instructions for checking your screening outcome.

Do not rely on an old notice or assume every institution uses the same admission calculation.

9. Direct Entry applicants should check their qualification route

Applicants using JUPEB, IJMB, Cambridge A’Level, ND, HND, NCE, a degree or another advanced qualification should review the conditions for their specific route.

Acceptance depends on the institution, programme, subjects, qualification and required grades or classification.

Do not convert every qualification into JUPEB points. Different routes use different grading systems.

Use the OGB Direct Entry Eligibility Checker to explore available requirements. Where your qualification or programme needs further assessment, ask OGB for a manual review .

Your final checklist before registration

Before proceeding, make sure you can answer yes to these questions:

Have I checked my exact course and institution?

Do my O’Level subjects and grades meet the requirements?

Is my proposed UTME subject combination correct?

Have I checked the rules on result sittings?

Are my personal and examination details accurate?

Am I following the correct admission-year instructions?

Meeting entry requirements makes you eligible for consideration. An eligibility result, calculated aggregate or payment for assistance is not an admission offer.
