School Fees of Federal and State Universities in South-East Nigeria: 2026 Updated Guide

By OGB Admission Hub | Updated 25 October 2026

How much does it cost to study at a federal or state university in South-East Nigeria?

The answer depends on the university, programme, level and, in some state institutions, whether the student is an indigene. Acceptance fees, accommodation and other registration expenses can also increase the amount required at entry.

This guide brings together available fees for 10 selected public universities across Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states.

Reading this guide: Where a complete 2026/2027 schedule is unavailable, the latest traceable previous-session figures or published examples are included. These are identified as reference figures rather than newly approved charges.

Federal Universities in South-East Nigeria

1. University of Nigeria, Nsukka — UNN

State: Enugu Reference session: 2025/2026 revised charges

UNN revised its proposed charges following negotiations with student representatives. Reports reproducing the university’s statement confirm these examples:

Faculty/category

Fresh students

Returning students in the cited categories

Social Sciences

₦173,640

₦156,200

Medicine

₦189,240

₦172,200

The university’s statement specifically replaced earlier first-year figures of ₦225,900 for Social Sciences and ₦243,900 for Medicine. Those earlier amounts should therefore not be used for these categories. Charges vary by faculty and level.

Additional published 2025/2026 breakdowns report:

Freshers’ programme group

Reported charge

Many Arts, Education, Agriculture and Social Science programmes

₦173,640

Many Engineering, Physical Science and Biological Science programmes

₦176,040

Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Law and several health programmes

₦189,240

These programme groupings are secondary-source references. Students should confirm their individual invoices, particularly for final-year or specialised charges.

2. Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka — UNIZIK

State: Anambra Reference session: Reported 2025/2026 schedule

Category

Reported amount

Fresh students’ school charges

₦162,500

Returning students’ school charges

₦95,000

Freshers’ acceptance fee

₦65,000

The reported school charges and acceptance payment total ₦227,500 for a fresher , excluding accommodation and any additional applicable expenses.

These remain previous-session reference figures until the student’s current invoice confirms the applicable amount.

3. Federal University of Technology, Owerri — FUTO

State: Imo Reference basis: Previously published programme structure, with selected 2025/2026 invoice examples

A published FUTO guide explicitly carries forward the previous session’s structure:

Freshers’ programme/category

Previous published amount

Engineering and many other departments

₦180,000

Geology and Architecture

₦186,000

School of Health departments

₦192,000

Human Anatomy and Physiology

₦236,400

Medicine and Surgery

₦572,400

The same reference gives returning-student figures of ₦123,000 for many departments , ₦135,000 for School of Health departments , and ₦179,400 for Anatomy/Physiology , with separate final-year categories.

These figures are historical planning references, not a confirmed comprehensive 2026/2027 schedule.

Publicly uploaded documents labelled 2025/2026 provide narrower supporting examples: a Radiography 100-level receipt shows ₦192,000 , an Information Technology 300-level receipt shows ₦123,000 , and an Optometry 200-level invoice shows ₦135,000 . These individual documents cannot establish the charge for every student.

4. Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike — MOUAU

State: Abia Reference session: Reported 2025/2026 schedule

₦80,000

SIWES students have separate categories. Payment-processing charges and accommodation should be checked separately.

5. Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike — AE-FUNAI

State: Ebonyi Session: Official 2026/2027 schedule

AE-FUNAI has published a current schedule with different charges across faculties.

For Agriculture freshers , the published grand total is ₦285,000 , including a ₦52,000 acceptance fee and the listed third-party charges.

Selected acceptance fees are:

Programme/category

Acceptance fee only

Agriculture and several other faculties

₦52,000

Engineering Technology

₦82,000

Nursing Science and Medical Laboratory Science

₦82,000

Law

₦102,000

Medicine and Surgery

₦102,000

Acceptance fees are not total school fees. The schedule also lists accommodation and other applicable items separately, so candidates should review their full programme breakdown.

State Universities in South-East Nigeria

6. Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki — EBSU

State: Ebonyi Reference session: Reported 2025/2026 freshers’ schedule

Programme/category

Indigenes

Non-indigenes

Medicine and Surgery / Law

₦389,400

₦453,400

Nursing / Medical Laboratory Science

₦344,400

₦408,400

Science and Management programmes listed in the report

₦164,400

₦209,400

Education: Economics and Accounting

₦137,400

₦182,400

Other Education and Agriculture categories

₦128,400

₦173,400

These are reported previous-session school-fee figures , not an independently verified current university-wide circular. The source contains some inconsistent department groupings, so applicants should confirm their specific course rather than extend one category to every department.

Acceptance, accommodation and other entry payments should be checked separately.

7. Imo State University, Owerri — IMSU

State: Imo Reference basis: Publicly circulated 2025/2026 payment guide

Student category

Reported school-fee component

Indigenes

₦31,500

Non-indigenes: other departments

₦151,500

Non-indigenes: professional courses

₦181,500

Non-indigenes: Medicine

₦191,500

The circulated guide also lists ₦71,500 acceptance , alongside separate medical, insurance, verification and other entry payments.

The low indigene school-fee component should therefore not be presented as the total cost of first-year registration . This guide is hosted by a third party and has not been authenticated as a current university circular.

8. Abia State University, Uturu — ABSU

State: Abia Reference session: Reported 2025/2026 invoice examples

Recent reporting describes these two programme-specific portal invoices:

Programme

Tuition shown

Other listed charges

Invoice total

Public Health, 100 level

₦56,000

₦131,500

₦187,500

Physiology, 100 level

₦112,000

₦131,500

₦243,500

The other charges comprise accreditation, development, hostel and SUG dues . Acceptance is separate.

Although the invoices were reportedly generated in September 2026, they are labelled 2025/2026 . They illustrate the fee structure and should not be described as a complete 2026/2027 schedule or a university-wide minimum and maximum.

9. Enugu State University of Science and Technology — ESUT

State: Enugu Reference basis: Official public fee page; session unspecified

ESUT’s public fee page lists:

Programme

Indigenes

Non-indigenes

Applied Biochemistry

₦160,400

₦160,400

Applied Biology

₦160,400

₦160,400

Applied Microbiology

₦160,400

₦160,400

These are useful published references for the named programmes. The page’s academic session and applicable student category should be confirmed before treating them as current charges.

Candidates should also request the separate acceptance and registration breakdown.

10. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University — COOU

State: Anambra Reference basis: Secondary report labelled 2025/2026

A published 2025/2026 report gives the following broad ranges:

Category

Reported range

Fresh students

₦127,465–₦401,815

Returning students

₦113,315–₦401,315

These ranges have not been matched to a current official fee circular , and the report does not provide a reliable programme-by-programme mapping. They should be used only as historical references, particularly when budgeting for Medicine, Law, Pharmacy or other professional programmes.

What Parents Should Check Before Comparing Schools

A school-fee figure may describe basic charges, a full registration invoice, or a package that includes accommodation. Comparing these without checking their components can produce a misleading result.

For each university, request:

The fee for the exact programme, level and academic session.

Acceptance and other one-time entry payments.

Accommodation and whether it is compulsory.

Medical screening, insurance and result-verification charges.

Faculty, departmental, laboratory and professional charges.

Whether the figure covers a semester or the full session.

Do not add acceptance or accommodation twice when they are already included in a published total.

Fee note: This guide combines current official information with clearly labelled previous-session reports and invoice examples. A student’s current university invoice or an approved updated circular takes precedence.
