BREAKING: JAMB 2026 Admission Deadline Passes — Will Public Universities Get an Extension? What Candidates Must Know

Published: November 1, 2026 By: OGB Admission Hub Editorial Desk

Anxiety grows among admission seekers as JAMB's October 31 deadline expires

The October 31, 2026 deadline set by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for public universities to conclude the 2026/2027 admission exercise has passed, raising fresh questions among candidates still awaiting admission offers.

Thousands of prospective students across Nigeria are expected to continue monitoring JAMB CAPS and their respective university portals as attention turns to whether the examination body will grant an extension.

As of November 1, 2026, OGB Admission Hub has not verified an official JAMB announcement extending the public university admission deadline.

House of Representatives calls for extension

On October 28, 2026, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education, Hon. Oboku Oforji, appealed to JAMB to extend the admission deadline.

He expressed concern that the existing timetable could disadvantage qualified candidates whose applications and admission processes had not been completed.

The lawmaker urged JAMB to allow universities additional time to conclude outstanding admission procedures.

However, an appeal for an extension should not be mistaken for an approved extension.

JAMB 2026/2027 admission deadlines

Under the timetable previously reaffirmed by JAMB:

Institution category

Admission deadline

Public universities

October 31, 2026

Private universities

November 30, 2026

Other tertiary institutions

December 31, 2026

These dates relate to the institutional admission timetable. Individual universities and colleges may have separate application, acceptance-fee and clearance deadlines.

Does this mean candidates who are not yet admitted have lost their chances?

Not necessarily in every case.

The expiry of the scheduled public university deadline creates uncertainty for candidates whose admission decisions remain pending.

However, students should avoid assuming that admission has been extended, that an offer has automatically been cancelled, or that their application can still be processed beyond the deadline without official authorisation.

The appropriate next step is to check their JAMB CAPS account, contact the institution's admission office where necessary, and monitor JAMB's official announcements.

Five things every candidate should do immediately

1. Check your JAMB CAPS status.

Visit https://efacility.jamb.gov.ng/ and review your admission status for the correct examination year.

2. Review any pending admission offer.

If an offer is displayed, confirm the institution and course before accepting or rejecting it. Follow the applicable official instructions promptly.

3. Confirm your O'Level result upload.

Ensure your required WAEC, NECO or other accepted results have been correctly uploaded and reflected where required.

4. Check your university admission portal.

Some institutions provide additional screening, admission or clearance information through their own official websites.

5. Beware of false extension announcements.

Do not pay anyone claiming to have secured a special admission extension or guaranteed admission slot without official verification.

Important clarification about the November 30 JAMB extension

JAMB previously announced a November 30, 2026 deadline for candidates with outstanding admission offers from 2021 to 2025 to accept or reject those offers on CAPS.

That is a separate matter and must not be confused with an extension of the October 31, 2026 deadline for public universities under the current 2026/2027 admission exercise.

Final update

For now, the central question remains:

Will JAMB extend the October 31 public university admission deadline following the appeal from the National Assembly?

Only a formal announcement from JAMB can resolve this uncertainty.

Candidates are advised to monitor https://www.jamb.gov.ng/ for verified developments.

OGB Admission Hub will update this report when an official decision is announced.
